LEESBURG, GA --
The Lee County Board of Education voted on Monday to name the new middle school the Lee County Middle School East Campus.

The current middle school will be named the West Campus; both will have the Trojans as their mascot.

Superintendent Dr. Larry Walters says from kindergarten on up, students in Lee County are Trojans and want to remain that way. Dr. Walters says they could’ve named the school the Bobcats or something else that would relate to Lee County, but school officials wanted to ensure the students in both schools felt equal.

Dr. Walters says having two middle schools will allow the students to participate more in extracurricular activities like competitive sports teams because there will be only 800 in each campus as opposed to the previous 1,600.

The East Campus is set to open in August of 2013.
