Albany Police Officers are in the Cromartie Beach area searching for an armed robbery suspect.

The suspect is believed to be a black male, wearing all black, about 5'7 to 5'8 and armed with a handgun.

The victim, a 55-year-old male, was robbed at gunpoint while walking home early Thursday morning at 2521 Beachview Drive.

The suspect forced the victim, Richard Phillips, to the ground and began demanding money. At some point during the robbery, the suspect struck Phillips several time in the head with the handgun.

One shot was fired, near the victim's head, while he was on the ground. The victim was not struck.

The suspect fled the scene on foot after obtaining the victim's wallet.

The case remains under investigation and is being handled by the Albany Police Department's Robbery/Homicide Unit.
