ALBANY, GA. --

Recent rains may bring out mosquitoes and for our Facebook story of the day you wanted to know how to get rid of the pesky pests.

Officials say standing pools of water in your yard creates a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

They say homeowners can put down sand to dry up the remaining moisture and avoid mosquitoes.

If there are heavy puddles in the yard, it's advised that people try out mosquito dunks.

“Once they put them into the water, they will activate and they will put off methoprene and that's the active ingredient in your mosquito dunks and that's what will kill the mosquito larvae,” said Donnell Mathis, with Dougherty County Public Works.

He says anything around the yard that can hold water should be drained to avoid the growth of larvae.
