ALBANY, GA --
Faith-based organizations around Southwest Georgia have received mini-grants to help in the "Prevention Strategies That Work" campaign to help those they serve make healthier choices.

The $17,000 in mini-grants are being provided by the Emory Prevention Research Center along with local partners such as the Cancer Coalition of South Georgia and are funded by the Centers for
Disease Control and the National Cancer Institute.

Recipients include New Beginning Missionary Baptist Church and Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Albany, the House of Grace in Sparks, and Serenity Christian Church in Valdosta.

The sites will be implementing proven and promising strategies for nutrition, physical activity and reducing exposure to secondhand smoke.

Emory Prevention Research Center Dr. Michelle Kegler shared in the release that, “the Emory Prevention Research Center is excited to partner with such enthusiastic faith-based organizations with volunteers dedicated to changing their community settings to promote healthy lifestyles. Since 2006, we have offered over $94,000 to more than 20 community organizations. We have learned so much from these communities about the real life issues of promoting health, and we hope they have also benefited from our collaborations to serve their communities.”
