The whooping cranes sucessfully arrived at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge in Wakulla County, Florida on Friday.
Initial Story (11/20/12)
Operation Migration, a non-profit organization that uses an ultra light air craft to lead a flock of whooping cranes from Wisconsin to Florida, is passing through southwest Georgia Tuesday and Wednesday.
The organization spends 5 months training the cranes to follow the aircraft, before leaving on their journey at the end of September."The reason we do that is because this generation of Whooping Cranes they're reared from the captive population, and without parent's showing them a migration route they have no way of learning it," explains Liz Condie, director of communications for Operation Migration.
So far the trek has covers over 1000 miles in 54 days, and only has two flights left until the birds reach their destination.
