Southwest Georgians weigh in on charter school amendment

ALBANY, GA -- Despite the high turnout of early voters, there are still plenty of Dougherty County residents turning up at the polls on November 6th.

For many of these voters, they're hoping to lead our country in the right direction by picking the right president but some of the local issues are also a hot topic.

On Tuesday, residents will take a stance on the Charter School Amendment 1 which would allow the creation of charter schools with or without the consent of local school boards.

Residents like Almetta Cambridge say the local school systems aren't working and families should have a second option to help them out.

Others, like James Smith feel we should focus on improving our school system and having a charter school would only take money away from the public schools.

For some, it hasn't been an easy decision. Brenda Shannon says while she wants what's best for the children and is thinking about voting yes, she's worried the amendment won't be carried out the way people say it would. Shannon says she's struggled with this decision for quite some time.
