Albany High School students will be around a little bit longer for the school day.
 /
Colby Gallagher
ALBANY, GA -- Starting next Monday,
Albany High School
's school day will be a little bit longer.
The
Dougherty County School System
says the change was necessary to stay in compliance with the Federal and State's Race to the Top School Improvement Grant.
To remain eligible for the SIG grant, DCSS was required to increase the school's instructional time by 60 hours a year. Broken down, this amounts to an addition of 24 minutes to each day or 3 minutes to each period.
DCSS Public Information Officer R.D. Harter says research has shown that longer school days contributes to accelerated academic performance and the school system is hoping to see this at Albany High.
Interim Principal Scott Horton says this change will allow longer instructional time, better preparing students for the future.
On Monday, the first period bell will ring at 8:35 a.m. and the school day will end at 4:14 p.m.
