LEESBURG, GA --
A Sunday afternoon fire at the Leesburg Publix caused damage nearing $1000.
Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph Hudgens said in a release a fire that damaged a Publix Super Market in Lee County was intentionally set.
Fire officials say the fire occurred Sunday around 3:45 p.m. at the Publix on 1212 US 19 South in Leesburg, Ga. They estimate the loss at $1,000 say fire officials.
The building was occupied at the time of the fire and was evacuated when the fire was discovered. No injuries were reported.
“Anyone who would set fire to an occupied building should be considered extremely dangerous,” Commissioner Hudgens said. “I want to remind everyone that any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could be important.”
Commissioner Hudgens is asking anyone with information about this fire to call the Arson Hotline at 1-800-282-5804. Rewards of up to $10,000 are given for information leading to the arrest and conviction of an arsonist. Calls are taken 24 hours a day; callers can choose to remain anonymous. The Commissioner’s Office and the Georgia Arson Control Board, Inc., sponsor the reward program and the hotline.
Hudgens’ Fire Investigation Unit is being assisted by the Lee County Sheriff’s Department.
