ALBANY, GA --
Code Enforcement Director Mike Tilson asked the Albany City Commission for more money to conduct demolitions of dilapidated houses.

The department is allocated $150,000 each year, but have been averaging $300,000 a year worth of demolitions.

Tilson asked the city for another $100,000-150,000 for the rest of the fiscal year. Commissioners say they have to think about being fiscally responsible when it comes to granting requests like these.

“It is expensive to bring down these dilapidated buildings, but at the same time, people tell me, like with the Heritage House, they're very happy that it's almost down,” says Marietta.

The commission considered giving Code Enforcement enough money to fund the demolitions that are already in the pipeline (there are currently 18 properties in the pipeline being reviewed in court).

However, in the end, a 4-1 vote tentatively approved giving the department an additional $150,000 for demolition purposes. The commission will vote again on this matter at their Tuesday night meeting.
