AMERICUS, GA --
Despite stormy weather at the beginning, hundreds of children and their parents came out for Phoebe Sumter's 1st Annual Children's Health Conference, which was held at the Sumter County Fairgrounds.

"We were a little worried at first because it was storming earlier this morning, but it stopped right as we were starting and then people start arriving," said Marcus Johnson, Phoebe Sumter Director of Marketing & PR. "We were very excited to see how this would turn out, and we were happy so many children were able to come and not only have a good time but focus on their health as well."

The theme for the event was "Get Fit, Get Active, Get Healthy", and there were free health screenings, presentations, music and games and a number of giveaways.School supplies and other items were given away, and children had an opportunity to partake in a number of games and activities, including basketball, jump rope and Zumba dancing just to name a few.

Y.N.C.K (Young N Cool Kids), a teen group based in Columbus that was recently featured on BET's 106 & Park, performed to the delight of the crowd. The group, which features two members that are from Americus (Keldrick Douglas and Cameron Douglas), also helped judged a dancing contest and they also signed autographs and took pictures with their fans.

"The weather was not great at first, but all in all it was a great day," said Johnson. "Hundreds of kids were screened for a number of health issues that plague our community, including child obesity and juvenile diabetes, and we were able to get a number of local organizations to be a part of this event as well. We can't thank all of our volunteers and sponsors such as Subway for helping us continue to promote healthy lifestyles in our community and we look forward to a bigger and better event next year!"
