ALBANY, GA. --

Wednesday Chick-Fil-A broke sales records after an outpour of support for their CEO's stance on traditional marriage.

Friday afternoon gay, lesbian, and same-sex marriage supporters were at Chick-Fil-A standing up for equality.

“I'm actually really impressed with the positive reception that we've gotten out here,” says David Gutierrez, University of Georgia Student Activist.

Gutierrez says when he decided to take a stand for gay and lesbian rights he didn't expect the southwest Georgia community to be so supportive.

“I think it's really encouraging to see that result and I think we're making a change for the positive,” says Gutierrez.

He and others in support of the LGBT relationships say holding a demonstration outside of Chick-Fil-A is less about what others believe but more about uplifting those who are torn between themselves and society.

“In our community there are a lot of teens that are lesbian, gay, transsexual, or bisexual and we want them to know that they're not alone,” says Laken Garver, student.

Garver is a heterosexual female who stands by those with a different sexual orientation. She believes people should be accepted as they are regardless of race, sexual orientation or creed.

Although protesters we're welcomed with support from some, there were those who stopped to debate the relationship between gays and God, but there was no hostility.

“This is America and we're entitled to free speech,” says David Gutierrez.

Gutierrez says during the demonstration a difference of opinion was expected, hence the cause for the protest. He says although others may not agree with his lifestyle, on some level, equality and acceptance is something that most people will be able to stand behind.
