ALBANY,GA --
Dougherty County School Board member Velvet Riggins faced a tribunal in Atlanta Tuesday.

April 25, Riggins was indicted by a Dougherty County grand jury on two counts of theft by taking, public record fraud and providing false information to obtain free school meals for her children.

Tommy Coleman, attorney for the school board, believes in order to make her case, she would have likely tried to get letters of recommendation from her school board members.

“I think that if you were an elected official who is sought to be removed, think you’d have to put on a case, just like if you were put on a case at a trial,” says Coleman.

The tribuanal, made of two school board members from other counties and State Attorney General Sam Olens, will make a recommendation to Governor Nathan Deal Friday as to whether or not they believe Riggins should be removed from the board until the end of her term or until the hearing, whichever comes first.
