ALBANY, GA -- The family medicine residency program at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital welcomed in its 2015 class of residents Wednesday, introducing them to both the community, and their fellow coworkers.

"I think this is one of the best things I’ve seen any hospital do for an incoming resident who's coming in for training. Because it tells them how needed, and how wanted they are by the community," said Director of the Residency Program, George Fredrick.

With the program dating back to 1990, Phoebe Putney has seen 60 percent of graduating residents stay within 60 miles of the Albany area. The ceremony was intended to spotlight these young residents, however it also showed the bright future of Phoeby Putney.

"The program is truly a win for the community here in southwest Georgia, the hospitals, and the residents. It doesn't just bring highly skilled professionals to the community, but it builds a relationship with talented physicians like those sitting here today," said Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives, David Ralston.

As each resident stepped forward to receive their white coat and pager, the crowd was reminded of what these items symbolize. A vital medical responsibility, and a higher level of respect and leadership that should be honored at all times.
