ALBANY, GA --
A new report is out saying that nearly one in four US teens are facing diabetes. In our Facebook Story of the Day, you wanted to know why this is.

FOX 31 spoke to Phoebe Putney Dietician Julie Joiner who says it is largely due to eating habits learned as a child.

Your body builds a resistance to insulin as you gain weight - which happens by eating foods that are high in sugar, carbohydrates or sodium and in turn causes type 2 diabetes.

The symptoms are not as severe with this type of diabetes but Joiner says that does not make it any less serious.

"Even if you do not feel bad right now, every minute that your blood sugars are up, you are increasing the risk for long-term damage to your body."

Joiner says you can reduce your risk by maintaining a healthy diet and exercise plan.
