ALBANY, GA --

In our Facebook Story of the Day you wanted to know how to tell a venomous snake apart from a non-venomous snake.

We spoke to the Chehaw Zoo Director, Kevin Hils, who says there are two easy ways to let you know.

First Hils said to check for a rattle on the end of the tail, an easy way to spot a dangerous rattlesnake. If it does not have a rattle, look for a Hershey kiss shaped marking on the side of its body which tells you it’s a venomous Copperhead.

Either way, Hils says you should never approach a snake in the wild if you spot one.

“If you have these guys around your house, it’s less likely that you’re going to have venomous snakes around your house and that’s hard for some people so I just tell folks leave them alone.”

If you spot a snake you believe is venomous, call Animal Control. In extreme cases where you need to move the snake immediately, use a long object to direct the snake into a lidded container like a trashcan.
