DOUGHERTY COUNTY, GA --
The unincorporated areas of Dougherty County may have to pay higher taxes in the next fiscal year to avoid a million dollar deficit.

Due to rising fuel prices, continual upkeep of additional street lights and other expenditures, the finance committee says they're looking at raising the millage rate by two mils.

The millage rate is currently 7.27, the same rate as it was 17 years ago.

“Revenues were down. We didn't collect the business licenses and alcohol beverage licenses that we normally collect. The insurance premium tax that we get from the state was down about $200,000 so that hurts a small fund like the special services.

There will be public forums held before the commission makes a final decision in July.
