Superintendent of schools, Dr. Joshua Murfree unveiled what he calls the Superintendent's Budget Plan for Cost Reduction.

Options include eliminating high school graduation coaches-which Finance Director Ken Dyer believes may not be a great idea.

“And I made a specific point to say if we choose to eliminate the graduation coach position, it may have a negative impact on our graduation rate and that's one of the goals of the system, to raise the graduation rate,” says Dyer.

Other cuts include removing foreign language programs from two elementary schools that are not federally mandated or federally funded, closing down the Isabella complex and Sylvandale and moving the Pre-K program to other schools, as well as selling buildings no longer in use, and reducing adjusted work days for staff from 10 to six, which is good news for staff. There is also a proposal to close an elementary school, but one has not been chosen at this time, and will save the system over $1 million dollars. It will not close until year two in the three year plan.

These are just options right now, the committee will wait to hear more from the state in terms of the money issue and will then proceed. Click here to view a copy of the proposal.
