ALBANY, GA -- Dr. Kathaleena Edward Monds, an Albany State University Information Systems professor, is the recipient of a mini grant awarded by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln 4-H. ASU Professor Awarded Lego Robotics GrantMonds is the only recipient in the state of Georgia, and one of only 58 nationwide.
Funds in the amount of $1,000 will be used to support a week-long summer camp to spark the interest of middle school-aged girls, who are members of Girl Scouts and 4-H, in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) through robotics. Computers, Global Positioning Systems, and Lego robotic kits will be used to demonstrate how to program robots and show participants how navigational technology works.
The camp will be held July 30 to Aug. 2 at Camp Pineywoods in Thomasville, Ga. and includes field trips to ASU’s Computer Science Department and the FAMU/FSU College of Engineering. Both universities will demonstrate high-powered robots and discuss various careers in computer science and engineering.
In 2010, Monds, a 4-H and Girl Scout volunteer won a similar grant to organize a camp aimed at reaching students from rural communities. Prior experience played a key role in helping the computer science graduate win approval for this year’s proposal.
“My short-term goal is to start a year-round girls Lego Robotics team that will compete regionally and nationally,” said Monds. “Receiving this mini-grant is the start to something new. It will empower girls to become confident in a traditionally male dominated sector. My long-term goal is to prepare them to compete on Robotics teams in college, like the SpelBots at my alma mater, Spelman College,” Monds added.
