ALBANY, GA -- Wednesday was the 11th annual National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Day; and local officials were out spreading the word.

the Girls Incorporated of Albany; along with the local Network of Trust hosted a community luncheon at the Hilton Garden Inn. The luncheon featured officials from both organizations as well as school nurses and other health professionals. The discussed more ways to promote abstinence and the consequences of having sex at a young age.

Dougherty County currently ranks 11th in Georgia for teen pregnancy. Students are asked to take a quiz online among other activities. Studies show that while the numbers have decreased nationally, nearly three in ten girls still get pregnant by the time they turn 20.

Girls Inc. Latina Initiative Project Manager Dr. Damary Bonilla-Rodriguez said continued awareness will help decrease that.

"In this community, it is so that the community changes in a positive direction and progresses so that girls are able to think about higher education, career, community empowerment; as oppose to become a negative statistic."
