ALBANY,GA --
A new fad among teenagers is landing them in the emergency room.

Six teens in California were hospitalized after drinking hand sanitizer in order to get drunk.

Sanitizer contains 62% ethyl alcohol, so it's a cheap and unrestricted way for kids to get drunk.

Major Bill Berry with the Albany-Dougherty Drug Unit says he hasn't seen that trend here, but the idea is not a new one.

“It's been well known for years that some people will resort to taking after shave lotion or any lotion or any type of lotion that has an alcohol base in it and drinking it, just to get the alcohol,” says Major Bill Berry with the Albany-Dougherty Drug Unit.

Officials say kids will use salt to separate the sanitizer from the alcohol for a stronger kick.
