Shirley Franklin visits ASU for Honors Convocation

The Honors Day Convocation at Albany State University got a visit from the Honorable Shirley Franklin on Friday.

ALBANY, GA -- The Honors Day Convocation at Albany State University got a visit from the Honorable Shirley Franklin on Friday.

Franklin is the former mayor of Atlanta.

She's the first black woman to be a mayor of major southern city and she is known as a straight shooter when it comes to politics, education and activism.

In her keynote address, she spoke about the importance of being globally-minded and giving back to your community.

Shirley Franklin says "we are encouraging them to do their best in school and to apply what they learn in school at the university to there everyday lives and to their career. I was delighted to come and be among there cheerleaders."

Franklin currently serves as the Board Chair and CEO of Purpose Built Communities, which is a national non-profit organization based out of Atlanta.
