ALBANY, GA. --
A Florida shooting death has sparked controversy around the country and leaves many wondering why the shooter wasn't arrested.

17-year-old Trayvon Martin was shot by a neighborhood security guard after an altercation.

Police say they didn't arrest the shooter due to Florida’s 'Stand your ground’ self-defense law.

FOX 31 spoke with Dougherty County’s district attorney about how the law works.

“You do not need to retreat before you bring about the use of deadly force to defend against deadly force being used against you or a third person or a forcible felony being carried out against you,” says Greg Edwards, Dougherty County District Attorney.

Edwards says the law is no different than a homeowner protecting his property from an intruder.

Georgia enacted the 'Stand your ground’ law in 2006.

The case involving the shooting death of Trayvon Martin has now been moved to a grand jury.
