ALBANY, GA -- In our Facebook Story of the Day viewers wanted to know how obesity is diagnosed.

Health officials say doctors can often determine if someone is obese by assessing their body and percentage of body fat. They say measuring weight in proportion to height is the traditional way of determining if someone is overweight, obese or at an appropriate weight.

Doctors can also determine this by calculating a person’s body mass index (BMI).

As of 2010, nearly 30 percent of people in Georgia were diagnosed as obese, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Learn more about the causes and diagnosis of obesity on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's website.
