The Dougherty County Elections Office hope offering a Saturday voting day will bring in more early voters for the Georgia Presidential Primary

ALBANY, GA -- On the first day of early voting for the Georgia Presidential Primary 18 people showed up out of more than 50,000 registered voters. During the first week, just over 150 people cast their ballot.

The low turnout has election officials scratching their heads.

“I had a discussion this morning with someone and she was, like, where she worked at her job no one knew Super Tuesday was coming and I was like, 'Okay... It’s all over the news,'” says Dougherty County Elections Supervisor Ginger Nickerson.

Many Dougherty County citizens say they were not aware that early voting began for the Georgia Presidential Primary.

“We don’t' know how people are missing it but hopefully we'll get the word out and friends will tell friends and family will tell family,” says Nickerson.

The Elections Office hopes they spread the work about the addition of Georgia’s first Saturday voting day. On Saturday, Feb. 25, Georgia citizens can vote between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. for the presidential primary; Dougherty County can vote that Saturday in the Candy Room at 125 Pine Avenue.

They also want voters to know this primary is not for specific party affiliates.

“In Georgia you're not connected with any party, you don't register with a party,” says Nickerson. “We encourage all to come out but they must choose between the republican and democratic ballot.”

To vote early in the Georgia Presidential Primary visit the second floor of the Government Building on Pine Avenue Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25 voters can cast their ballot between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Candy Room on 125 Pine Avenue.

Early voting in the Georgia Presidential Primary ends March 2.
