ALBANY, GA -- Jeff Neal, owner of Railway Freight Furniture store in Albany is fed up with outside furniture peddlers.

He showed up at the city's Tuesday meeting with nine other furniture store representatives to ask that the commissioner monitor the peddlers more closely.

Peddlers set up in empty parking lots near busy intersections and sell furniture or other items from the back of a truck.

They only have to pay a $100 occupation tax certificate and fill out an application in order to push their wares around town for a year.

Neal says it's not a level playing field when other stores have to pay more in property and insurance taxes.

Plus, he says, local stores support the community.

"Stores just represented here employ well over 100 families and so we want to encourage people to buy from local businesses that live here, work here, and go to church with you here," says Neal.

City Attorney Nathan Davis will look at the city ordinance and bring back suggestions to the board at a later date.
