Henrietta McArthur Singletary was the first and has served as the only board chair for the Phoebe Foundation Board of Directors, the philanthropic arm of Phoebe Putney Health System.

After 23 years of service, Singletary retired as board chair, but will remain a member of the Phoebe Foundation Board.

“Henrietta Singletary has served as the first and only chair of the Phoebe Foundation Board since its creation in 1989,” said Joel Wernick, President/CEO of Phoebe Putney Health System. “She has dedicated her life to philanthropic causes and Phoebe is honored to have her among its many supporters.”

Singletary was honored last week with a resolution, an honorary gavel and a standing ovation by members of the Board before officially retiring.

“I am honored and appreciate the privilege of serving as chair of the Phoebe Foundation over the years,” Singletary said. “Phoebe is a wonderful facility and has made such a difference in the lives of so many people in our area. Thank you so very much for allowing me to be a part of such a truly special place.”

Singletary led the Phoebe Foundation to successfully complete a number of major capital campaigns, including the $7 million construction of Willson Hospice House.

A cancer survivor, she was also named the 2008 Tree Lighter for the Lights of Love Ceremony, sponsored annually by the Junior Woman’s Club of Albany.

Singletary’s contributions have not been limited to Southwest Georgia. She has worked on countless community causes and initiatives throughout the state – both at the board table and in the trenches.

During the Carter Administration, she served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Agriculture for Rural Development. In 2002, she was the only Southwest Georgian named to the Georgia Cancer Coalition.

She serves on the Board of Directors for SunTrust Bank South Georgia and the Georgia Chamber of Commerce. She serves as an Emeritus Trustee for the University of Georgia Foundation, a member of the University of Georgia Press Advisory Council, and the State Botanical Garden of Georgia at the University of Georgia Board of Advisors.

She is also active with the Charity League of Albany and Porterfield United Methodist Church.

Singletary, a partner in McArthur Farm and Timberland, holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia and a master’s in business administration from Emory University. She is the wife of the late Marvin Singletary and the mother of three sons, McArthur, Duncan and Raymond,
