ALBANY, GA -- The week between Christmas and New Year’s Day is one of the deadliest out on the roads.

That’s why police want you to be extra careful, whether you’re the one drinking or not. Officials tell drivers staying sober to watch out for drunk drivers at all times of the day and night.

“You'll find them from 8:00 in the morning on up. Sometimes you see them and they're still driving under the influence from the night before and they don't realize that when they get up and start their day, they think they're ok and they're not,” says Cpl. John Segroves with the Albany Police Department.

There are several ways to avoid a DUI. If you're hosting a party and you see one of your guests has had too much to drink, take their keys away and drive them home, or offer to let them spend the night. Police say if you’re going to several parties in one night, limit yourself to one or two drinks, but make sure to stop drinking well enough before leaving the party.

Probably the smartest thing to do for those who choose not to forego liquor is to call a cab.

“Call them back every time you want to leave. Use that all night. It's a lot cheaper than a DUI,” says Segroves.

Officers promise they will be out in full force to keep you safe this holiday season.
