ALBANY, GA. -- During Monday night’s Albany-Dougherty County Aviation Commission meeting officials approved a step that could lead to the Southwest Georgia Regional Airport becoming international.

A presentation was brought before the Aviation Commission to go into phase one of trying to make the terminal a 'user fee point of entry'.

This means Albany’s airport would be able to export produce and offer charter flights.

“There is a lot of hurdles that has to be cleared but we have to be sure that we know what we're doing before we do them,” said Southwest Georgia Regional Airport Director Yvette Aehle, “So he's going to go out and gather some data, look at what is typically imported and exported out of this area and try and see if this is something that we can further consider.”

The data gathering process will take about four to six weeks before officials know if they can move forward with potential plans.
