The suspect has been identified as 37-year-old Eric Devaughn Colbert. He is charged with nine counts of aggravated assault and one count on aggravated assault on an officer.

The officer at the bank has been identified as 46-year-old Christopher Richardson, who has been with the APD for three and a half years. He is currently assigned to the Uniform Bureau: West District.

APD has also confirmed that Richardson did not return fire at Colbert.

Initial Story
An Albany Police Department Officer is uninjured in an attempted bank robbery this morning.

Around 9:00 A.M., the suspect walked into First State Bank on North Slappey Blvd. He spotted an Albany Police officer helping with a bank escort.

The suspect fired one shot at the officer and ran, with more shots being fired. The officer chased after the suspect and called for back up. The suspect was arrested about 15 minutes later in 1100 block of Whispering Pines.

“You just kind of get scared after the moment. You react and do what you have to do and lock the door and then get scared,” said Janice Nix who was working across the street when the shots went off.

“I heard gunshots. I had patients in the waiting room and as I looked up over toward the bank, I saw one man running and a person behind him,” said Nix.

Police say this incident should serve as warning to other would be criminals.

“They're going to see officers everywhere, so they need to be put on alert right now. We're going into 12 hour shifts which means there are going to be more officers out on the streets, so they need to be put on alert right now that you're going to see an officer somewhere in Albany during this holiday season,” said Phyllis Banks of the Albany Police Department.
