Danny Lyons, once a photographer for SNCC, says it is emotional coming back to Albany where he once took pictures documenting the Albany Movement
ALBANY, GA -- A photographer from the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) during the Civil Rights Movement paid a visit to Albany: One of his first stops during that time.
“This is very emotional for me to come back here,” says Danny Lyon, who says he was just 20 years old when he got off the bus in Albany.
Lyon shared stories including about when he took pictures of girls being held in the Leesburg Civil War Stockade in Americus during the Albany Movement.
Albany State University students helped host Tuesday’s event and say it was quite an experience.
“It feels great to help out with something that helped us get into school and helped us get to where we are now, also to learn about the movement and learn about my history,” says Jonathan Simmons, ASU student and president of their Honors Program.
Tuesday’s event with Lyon is a part of the weeklong commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Albany Movement.
