ALBANY, GA -- In our Facebook Story of the Day, you wanted to know if rabies is an issue in Southwest Georgia.

According to a local veterinarian there's no telling just how many animals there are with rabies or exactly how widespread it is, especially those that are wild. Dr. Andrew Curtis says some contaminated animals don't show aggression and die quickly.

He says it is the law for pets to receive an annual rabies shot but many pet owners don't get the vaccination for them yearly.

“The only reason they come in is because animal control told them to. they check that animal, or that dog, and find out that they are unvaccinated so they require that the owner get to the vet and get a rabies shot,” says Curtis.

The cost for a rabies shot is $16 per year.
