In a last minute result report, Ivey Hines defeats Melissa Strother; Strother supporters plan to contest

ALBANY, GA -- In the race for a seat at Ward II City Commissioner in Albany, Ivey Hines came out as the winner with 51 percent of the vote as of 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Hines serves as a pastor in Albany and also works at the marine base. Previously, Hines said his desire is to help people in the community, particularly the youth.

The race for Ward II took a turn around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday night when one precinct was left to report results: Strother lost the lead then going from 54 percent to 49 percent while Hines went from 46 percent to 51 percent.

Some supporters of Strother say they want to contest the results because they say absentee ballots were opened before they should have been and approximately 200 votes were counted for disqualified candidate Cheryl Calhoun when they should not have been.

“Now the state attorney general's going to have to get involved to see exactly what to do and mediate however we're going to have to resolve this issue. We may have to do another election again that means people have to spend monies and time to go back when their vote didn't count,” says Strother supporter William G. Livingston.
