ALBANY, GA. -- The first African Americans to serve in the United States Marine Corps are being honored with the Congressional Gold Medal. It's the highest civilian award in the United States.

Congressman Sanford D. Bishop Jr. joined a bipartisan majority in the U.S. House of Representatives voting in favor of the H.R. 2447 resolution.

Montford Point Marines are receiving the award for their service during World War II.

“We received a lot of support from the community and the past and current commandants for this effort to make sure the Montford Point Marines receive the medals,” says Montford Point Chapter 15 President Nathaniel Page.

He says the chapter plans to hold a banquet to recognize the accomplishment.
