A local psychologist attributes the family and church oriented community in Georgia for the low suicide rates
ALBANY, GA -- In our Facebook Story of the Day, you wanted to know more about a study that shows low suicide rates in Georgia and why the state has low rates.
According to the study released by the Centers for Disease Control, the percentage of Georgians 18 and older attempting suicide is 0.1 or less while the national average is 0.5 percent. For those 18 to 29 years old, those attempting suicide in Georgia is 0.4 percent while the U.S. average is one percent.
“We have a lot of folks here who have great connectivity with their family, and a lot of people who have very close spiritual connections with their church families. So when you have folks that have that touchstone and social support network, I think invariably you're going to have a lower suicide rate,” says Dr. Cheryl Kaiser, psychologist at Insight Psychotherapy and Assessment Services.
According to the study, suicide attempts were lower in Non-metropolitan areas than in large metropolitan areas.
