Preliminary plans are in the works for a bridge to Clark Avenue to help in case of more severe flooding

ALBANY, GA -- It's a project that began in 1999 as a response to the 1994 flood, when some city intersections and parts of the Liberty Expressway flooded and blocked ways out of the area.

Now the Clark Avenue Bridge is making some headway.

Construction on the $40 million project is expected to begin in 2018. Money for it came after the city postponed the Oglethorpe Boulevard widening to fund the Clark Avenue bridge.

The bridge will go over the Flint River from West Society to Clark Avenue, which will span the flood plain, areas surrounding the river that could be severely flooded as in 1994. The purpose of the bridge is to provide road access in case of severe floods like in 1994.

The Georgia Department of Transportation is gathering public input and conducting environmental studies of the project. Thursday's Community Action Committee meeting about the bridge was a part of this.
