ALBANY, GA -- In today’s Facebook Story of the Day you wanted to know if drinking too much water can be dangerous.

Doctors say it is important to make sure you stay hydrated, especially during these hot summer months, but you don't want to overload yourself.

Too much water can actually throw off the body's electrolyte balance.

“The best thing to do is to go by your thirst and when you start sweating, start drinking water and continue to drink water for thirst, but don't over drink water way beyond what your thirst level is,’ said Dr. Joseph Stubbs at Albany Internal Medicine.

Dr. Stubbs says in extreme cases drinking too much water can lead to an altered mental state, comma and even death.
