New free service offered to help smokers quit

WORTH COUNTY, GA -- A new service is being provided by the Southwest Georgia Public Health District to help smokers who are trying to quit.

If you call Georgia’s Tobacco Quit Line, someone can know help provide smokers with free Nicotine Replacement Therapy – including nicotine patches or gum – for four weeks. Local health departments say it will help those who want to quit but do not have insurance to cover the cost.

Health Promotions Coordinator David Cooper says approximately 20 percent of Southwest Georgians are nicotine users and that the heavy nicotine users in the area should benefit from the new service. He says the free Nicotine Replacement Therapy was tested in other regions and has worked well.
