DOUGHERTY COUNTY, GA -- One local man is hoping to solve the truancy problem in Dougherty County.
Project Shield CEO, Prince Edwards presented the findings of a truancy survey to the Dougherty County Commission Monday.
The survey involved interviewing inmates at the Dougherty County Jail, and asking them if truancy played a part in creating their current situation.
According to his study - Edwards says students who skip school are more likely to try drugs, have unprotected sex, and engage in criminal activity.
He says it all starts in the home, but this time it will take much more.
“With 16,000 children, then yes, it's going to take more than just a parent. It's gonna take the school system, it's gonna take the commission board, it's gonna take the sheriff's department,” said Edwards.
He plans on sharing the survey with students in the school system to hopefully urge them to attend school as a way to stay on the right side of the law.
