AMERICUS, GA -- On tomorrow, June 19th, residents in Americus & Sumter County will have to wait only 150 days before realizing their dream of a new Phoebe Sumter Medical Center and fully turn the page after the devastating tornado destroyed the old facility in 2007.

"We are 150 days away, and of course the excitement continues to build," said Marcus Johnson, Phoebe Sumter Marketing & PR Director.  "We are on time and under budget, and Brasfield & Gorrie and everyone involved with the construction continues to do an amazing job.  We will have a press conference on Friday, September 9th to announce the official 100 day countdown, and there will be a number of activities and events throughout that time period that will lead us to the opening of the new Phoebe Sumter Medical Center on Saturday, December 17th.  The public will have opportunities to tour the facility before the opening date (including a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony in December), and we ask that everyone stay tuned for more updates in the near future."

The new Phoebe Sumter Medical Center will be 183,000 square feet, four stories and feature all private rooms.  One of its many unique qualities will include a 26,000 square foot roof garden.  The green roof is the largest to be constructed for a healthcare facility in the Southeastern U.S. According to CEO Keith Petersen, it will be "the finest small hospital in America"

While the new four-story, 76-bed state of the art medical facility is under construction, the existing medical center on Forsyth Street continues to provide medical services.
