Update with video; Officials said parents should get kids vaccinated now to beat back-to-school rush.

ALBANY, GA. -- It’s a little over a month before schools starts and health officials are asking parents to get their children’s vaccinations up to date now to beat the back-to-school rush.

Some of the shots children may need to update are the Tetanus and whooping cough vaccines.

Health officials said children aren't the only ones in the household who need prevention; students headed off to college are reminded to get the meningitis vaccination to prevent disease.

Folks at the Lee County Health Department said parents often forget that they too need protection against disease.

“As adults it not only provides immunity for us but it also helps protect our children because if we came home with whooping cough, we could potentially expose our children or our friends and family who may be around our children,” said Lee County Health Department Nurse Manager Dana Hager, “So by protecting ourselves we also protect our children.”

Dana Hager said the Lee County Health Department has plenty pneumonia vaccines available for adults.
