Second Harvest food bank donates water

SASSER, GA -- People living in the Sasser area say recent rains weren't enough to replenish the earth. They are now happy to have some relief coming from the Second Harvest of Southwest Georgia Food Bank.

A truck from the Second Harvest of Southwest Georgia Food Bank dropped off 1680 gallons of water to the Sasser flea market on Thursday.

Some of the residents say they have been living without water for almost three weeks.

"I used to go to Dawson to my auntie's house to fill up some jugs," said Sasser resident Willie Jean White.

Ms. White made it to the flea market just after the truck delivered the water. She says she may not be able to shower with the water but it will help cut down on her trips to Dawson.

Unlike White, not all residents were able to pick up the water. Billy Mcclung, warden for the Terrell State Prison, brought along a fire rescue crew to help deliver boxes of water to residents.

"I know a specific road. So, I'm just going to go down that road and basically contact with the people that live there to see which ones wells are dry and which ones need water," said Terrell State Prison Warden Billy Mcclung.

Tony Hall, director for the Second Harvest of Southwest Georgia Food Bank, says as the water runs out, they will bring more for those who need it.

Water will be at the Sasser Flea Market for pickup through Saturday, June 18, 2011.
