LEE COUNTY, GA -- Smoke billowed out from a wooded area just behind some homes in Lee County off of Highway 82 W. on Sunday.

Capt. Todd Kirkland with the Lee County Fire Department says limbs and debris were set on fire and left unattended. He says that’s when the trash fire spread across a pecan orchard and into a field of pine trees behind some residences

Kirkland says approximately 50 to 55 acres were damaged.

Firefighters and forestry units were called to the scene around 2:45 p.m. Sunday afternoon and crews left at 8:40 p.m. Kirkland says five fire trucks, two brush trucks and three forestry units -- including a spotter in a helicopter -- were on the scene.
