ALBANY, GA -- On Wednesday night, the Southwest Georgia Project Inc. kicked off the 50th Anniversary for the Southwest Georgia Civil Rights Movement Reunion at Albany State University.

They began with a meet and greet at the Civil Rights Institute.

During the four day long event speakers and entertainers will cover the past, present and future of the Civil Rights Movement.

One activist said this is about educating the youth.

"It's important to show young people where we have come from, where we are now and where we are going from here," said Activist Russia Sherrod, "It's important for young people to remember just how deep it was at one time."

Russia Sherrod is the daughter of Shirley Sherrod.

Event organizers are hoping the conference will have a great turnout from the community.
