ALBANY, GA. -- **UPDATED at 3:00 p.m. Thursday March 24, 2011**

The Fire Department has cancelled all scheduled burns for Thursday March 24 and Friday March 25, 2011.

Fire officials say the wind has picked up and it’s too dangerous to have large flames in windy weather.

Although fire fighters are trained to fight fire in all weather conditions, the controlled burns were supposed to serve as a training opportunity.

In order to decrease the chances of flames spreading the burns are rescheduled for next week.

The Dougherty County Fire Department will burn several units on South McKinley Street from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.  starting Wednesday March 23, 2011 and ending Friday March 25, 2011.

Fire officials advise to avoid driving near the 700 block of South McKinley if you can.  All persons with asthma are urged to remain inside during the next few days.

The fires will be testing multiple methods to prevent fire from spreading to neighboring structured and more.

The fires will also benefit everyone on multiple fronts.  Chief James Carswell says burning the structures will rid the neighborhood of eyesores, will cut down on crime, and helps fire department recruits have the opportunity to hone some of their new safety skills.
