SOWEGA C.O.A. holds screenings

ALBANY, GA. -- The SOWEGA Council on Aging launched its Medicare Diabetes Screening Project in Albany today.

Nearly eight out of every ten senior citizens have either Diabetes or pre-Diabetes.

Mayor Willie Adams reminded the group that diabetes screenings are always free to Medicare recipients.

Diabetes has been called the ‘silent killer’ because it has virtually no symptoms.

But the disease is very treatable and preventable.

"There are so many people that live a sedentary lifestyle but if you get out and exercise and if you eat right, you can manage diabetes," said Maurice Madden of the Medicare Diabetes Screening Project.

Tuesday marks the American Diabetes Association Alert Day.
