ALBANY, GA -- A new scam is making its way through Southwest Georgia.

Deputies say scammers are calling residents, posing as Publisher Clearinghouse officials, and asking for money. The scammers are telling people they’ve won hundreds of thousands of dollars, but need to pay the taxes first.

Captain Craig Dodd is with the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office. He says residents need to keep their guard up and don't fall for this scam. “Hopefully people are listening whenever we put this on the news because they are targeting senior citizens for the most part. They’re all on a fixed income, they’re retired, and they can’t afford to lose this money. These people don't care they just want to take their money,” says Dodd.

Dodd says you can find out if any winnings are valid by going to the Publishers Clearing House website.
