City leaders prepare to count the homeless to ensure Albany receives its fair share of resources

ALBANY, GA. -- Mayor Willie Adams says Albany has a homeless problem that's getting worse.

“There's no question about it.  Our homeless problem is growing worse because of the economy.  There are a lot of people who are homeless and now there are a lot of people who are one or two paychecks away from being homeless” says Adams.

The official homeless count will start Sunday and last through Friday.  David Blackwell with the Albany Homeless Coalition says two-page surveys will be completed by those who agree to complete it.

Officials say it’s important to include the precariously housed in the homeless count, meaning people who may live with family or friends and don’t have a permanent address.  “It’s important to get an accurate count that way the appropriate funds can come into this community for services for those who find themselves in that situation” says Blackwell.
