High School students compete in an academic competition

ALBANY, GA. -- The Dougherty County School System held their Georgia Academic Decathlon Tuesday.

Students from Westover, Albany, and Dougherty High Schools participated in the all day event.

Components of the competition include written and verbal tests on a variety of subjects.  Students and their academic advisor even battled it out in a quick fire series of questions toward the end of the competition.

Secondary Curriculum Supervisor Cassandra Sampson says the academic teams are just like sports because they train, practice, and compete.  “The academic decathlon student groups are meant to foster a love of learning.  It gives you a purpose for learning additional things that you wouldn’t have had an opportunity to study in the classroom” says Sampson.

Individual winners and the overall school winner will be announced the second week in January.
