Dougherty County Sheriff's Deputies say a 5-year-old girl was a pawn in an elaborate child support scheme

ALBANY, GA -- Dougherty County Sheriff's Deputies say a 5-year-old girl was a pawn in an elaborate child support scheme.

Investigators arrested 38-year-old Regina Thompson. They say Thompson is the girl's godmother, and that she told an unsuspecting man that he was the girl's father in order to get child support.

Deputies say the girl's parents didn’t know about the scheme.

We received some calls and e-mails which led us to the actual mother of the child. She was pretty shocked by the whole thing, especially when I showed her the photographs of the child. She was pretty shocked all this was going on,” said Capt. Craig Dodd of the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Department.

Detectives say Thompson received about $1,600 in child support over two years. She's charged with five counts of theft by deception.
