The Albany Fire Department opened the doors of their new training facility Tuesday afternoon
ALBANY, GA. -- Fire fighters, government officials, and others celebrated the grand opening of the Albany Fire Department’s new training facility at 115 Honeysuckle Drive.
Fire Chief James Carswell says 90% of the fire fighters’ job is training to make sure when they respond to fire the other 10% of the time - they do an excellent job. “The 90% participation in preparing to do that 10% well and this is where it fits in. With this facility we'll be better prepared to do our jobs” says Carswell.
The $1.8 million dollar facility was built using money from SPLOST and teamwork from City and County Public Works and Water Gas and Light.
The training facility sits on 26 acres and includes an educational building, tower burn simulator building, and a small lake. The fire department has room to expand in the future since they only occupy 10 acres.
Chief Carswell says fire fighters will also be able to enhance their skills using the lake to get trained in scuba diving.
Officials say they plan to share the space with other Southwest Georgia Fire Departments who need different kinds of training.
